A quick question

So, I recently signed up for Pinterest. I've heard and seen lots of people using it, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do at this point. I don't have any boards or pins or whatever the terminology is. Help a girl out?

I haven't done much. The first thing I did was add all the pictures I like that fit with my book. (mostly found in deviantart.com). Then eventually I started adding links to awesome blog posts or funny comics that i came across.
Just click add+ and put in the link. It'll ask you what board to put it on, you could say, "book" or "funny" or something like that to categorize the pins.

I can't help you I'm afraid. I've deliberately stayed away from it because I worry that it will suck me in and become yet another black hole of procrastination :-)

Okay, so, I've been playing with Pinterest and I love it.

First thing you'll want to do is click your name on your Pinterest main page so it takes you to your profile. From there, edit your boards. Re-name them, change their categories, whatever.

Start with the basics. There are lots of recipes on Pinterest so I'd definitely make one of your boards for that. Books, writing, quotes, whatever you think you might need. You can always rename/delete/add boards later.

If you're on Goodreads, you can pin book covers from there to your books boards. I set up boards for books in general, and for the books I read in 2010, 2011, and 2012 (which is a work-in-progress).

Then start exploring. I definitely recommend installing the "Pin It" button to your browser. That way when you're off the site and find something you want to put there, you can do so easily. You can also add stuff from your own hard drive, if you want.

If you mouse over the "Everything" link at the top it brings up the categories users can put their boards into. There's film, music, and books; geek; food; etcetera. Just start looking through. Every pin will show a "Repin" button if you mouse over it. Click that to put something onto your boards.

I love Pinterest, but I've about decided to delete most of my boards for copyright reasons. Did you know that you're liable if you pin something that you didn't have permission to pin? I've pinned all of these gorgeous photos that I'm now worried should never have been pinned in the first place. And the way Pinterest words things shifts the blame to the user.

I should say re-pinned. I've never pinned something from someone else's website myself.

I think of Pinterest as a page of visual bookmarks. Just like you can bookmark certain pages in your browser using your bookmarks menu, you can do the same thing using images with Pinterest. It's also kind of a combination between that and Facebook- once you have people start following you and you follow them, you can see what your friends are pinning and they can see what you've pinned. Sometimes at night I enjoy logging in to Pinterest and browsing through their "Popular" boards or different categories under their "Everything" tab. Last week the spring weather had me in a gardening mood so I browsed the gardening boards- got lots of landscaping inspiration for the backyard and great tips for my vegetable garden. :-) Now I can just go back to my gardening board when I'm in the mood for an outdoor project and click through my pins to see what I want to tackle. I do the same thing each week with my Recipe board before I grocery shop- I choose a new recipe or two and make sure I have the ingredients on hand. My laptop has become my new cookbook!

Thanks for the help and advice! I might have to give it a try. (I have to admit, I'm worried about the time consuming aspect of it. I have a hard enough time juggling the stuff I already do.)
